Navigating NDIS Supported Independent Living (SIL) Budgets

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding aimed at providing one-on-one or shared support with daily tasks (cooking, personal care, cleaning) so you can live in your own home or a shared house with other participants.

How is SIL Assessed and Funded?

SIL is funded under Core Supports - Assistance with Daily Life. The application and approval process involves several critical steps:

  • Roster of Care (RoC): A detailed template submitted to the NDIS that documents the exact hours of support required by every resident in the house, including shared ratios and overnight needs.
  • Functional Assessments: Allied health reports (such as OT reports) indicating the level of help required for daily personal tasks.
  • SIL Quote Approval: The NDIS reviews the submitted quote and RoC against their "reasonable and necessary" criteria before allocating the budget.

SIL vs. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)

It is important to note the difference between these two budgets. SIL funds the support staff who assist you with daily tasks inside the home. SDA funds the physical house itself (accessible structural features). You can receive both in your NDIS plan.

"Living independently doesn't mean doing everything alone. SIL provides the security of 24/7 care in a home environment that you choose."
