What is an NDIS Behaviour Support Plan & Do You Need One?

An NDIS Behaviour Support Plan is a formal document designed by a registered Behaviour Support Practitioner. It contains evidence-based strategies to support participants, families, and carers, and it is a legal requirement if any restrictive practices are used.

Interim vs. Comprehensive Plans

Under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission rules, plans are divided into two distinct stages:

  • Interim Behaviour Support Plan: Developed within 1 month of a practitioner being engaged. It focuses on immediate safety, identifying potential triggers, and outlining clear guidelines for carers.
  • Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan: Developed within 6 months. It is based on a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) and outlines long-term skill-building strategies and reduction protocols for restrictive practices.

Do You Need a Plan?

You require a Behaviour Support Plan if:

  • • Your NDIS plan contains funding under "Capacity Building - Relationships" (Category 11).
  • • Your support providers utilize any restrictive practices (chemical, physical, environmental, mechanical, or seclusion) to maintain safety.
  • • A participant's behaviours pose a significant risk of harm to themselves or others.
"A Behaviour Support Plan is not about control; it is a roadmap to help support teams create a safe, understanding, and positive environment for the participant."
